. right now the storm has started bearing down on canada. it's about 145 miles or so southwest of halifax, snow scotia after brushing parts of massachusetts overnight. the storm disrupted vacations this labor day weekend. its close skirt up the eastern seaboard was less intense than feared. the storm is still kicking up dangerous rip currents. we have nbc's kevin tibbles live in rock port, massachusetts. sunshine in the last hour. looks like sunshine how. you're having a good time it looks like. >> reporter: alex, earl we hardly new you. i don't think we got to meet you at all last night. it rained here a little bit, but nothing like the dire predictions that have been taking place all week with this cat 4 storm showing up here. earl turned out to be a bit of a wimp actually. it's a beautiful day in rock port. all the activities planned for the labor day weekend and were put on hold, everything is being put back on. if folks were headed out here and were a little scared of the weather forecast, my advice to you would be to hop into a car right now because it is a gorgeous day here in rock

toward the coast of nova scotia in canada. kevin tibbles is live in rock port, massachusetts, where last hour we were seeing maybe little rain and wind when i talked to you. what's the scene like now kevin? >> alex, the sun is out here in rock port. it's going to be a lovely day. as a matter of fact, all the activities for labor day that were canceled here have all been put back on because earl really didn't live up to his reputation. not only crossing further out to sea than here in cape ann, but actually not, not dropping as much rain as people expected or at least they had been prepared to expect when this storm went through. so it's going to be a lovely day here. a lot of the boats have been taken out of the harbor. but i'm assuming that they're going to started going back in today because it's supposed to be a lovely day here. the only thing i really have to add to all this, because i don't have a lot to talk about in terms of damage or anything like that, is that yes, you're absolutely right, this storm is heading towards nova scotia. i'm going to be calling my son after this becau

. it is now on its way to canada after pounding new england with wind and with rain. is steve doocy still on that cruise in canada? >> he is. >> live in chatham, massachusetts with the latest for us. were you on the cruise with your dad, peter? >> i am not. my dad -- oh, i was on the cruise, yeah, ended up having to fly out to halifax because i was needed here but luckily, tropical storm earl was a lot weaker than originally feared when it ended up coming into massachusetts last night. it was still a very powerful storm until it left the area about two hours ago. take a look at this. >> it's almost midnight here in massachusetts. we're down by the water and hurricane earl has been downgraded to tropical storm earl. you can see the wind and water are still coming in very, very hard. it hurts when it hits you in the face. you look up and you can see that red flag waving behind me. that's how fast the wind is blowing right now and you can see there's a beam from the chatham white house still beaming out light for miles to miles. a lot of people came out to see what was going on. they left

pounded coastal new england last night and on the way to canada. bringing heavy winds and heavy rains but no major problems except for minor flooding and power ought ages. we'll go live to cape cod on how the residents handled the storm. rick, you are ready for a nap? >> thank you, i like that. earl is moving out of here. little bit of rain remains. couple of thing tropicals. this was gaston and will likely become something later today and tomorrow . impact us posentially. this flair up could have pulled off north. that is earl moving around bang lor at this point . within a couple of four or five hours it is done for us . we will be done for earl. that is good news. we'll have complete sunshine much of the eastern sea board and so planning your labor day weekend, behind the storm things are looking beautiful. stay out of the water to let the rip currents go away. tomorrow things will be great. >> a state of emergency declared in new zealand christchurch. a second earthquake hit there this morning. a lot of people are trapped. happens of buildings are collapse power is out to thousand

by the northeast. have you heard about this before making landfall in canada as a tropical storm. in its wake, pounding surf but mostly sunny skies. the real damage left by this storm may be its economic impact. jennifer davis is live in new orleans or rather orleans, massachusetts. jennifer, good to see you. business bouncing back here? >> hi there, rick. they sure hope. so it is a picture-perfect day on cape cape cod. blue skies, sunny, 80-degree weather. except not everyone is here that would be on a typical labor day weekend. no question there was but a few hundred people that lost power and very minor flooding. biggest hit was to questions like the orleans inn here. typically this would be a huge weekend for them. there is no question though owner ed moss says they have taken a hit. here is what he said. >> we are always 100% booked. today we do have rooms available. it is beautiful. we do have people coming in last-minute reservations. but we have never before had a labor day where we weren't totally booked. >> ed says typically they are 100% booked on labor day. rye now he put them at
